With the shift from film to digital, a new view of the future of cinematography has emerged. Today’s successful cinematographer must be equal parts artist, technician, and business-person. The cinematographer needs to master the arts of lighting, composition, framing and other aesthetic considerations, as well as the technology of digital cameras, recorders, and workflows, and must know how to choose the right tools (within their budget) to get the job done. David Stump’s Digital Cinematography focusses primarily on the tools and technology of the trade, looking at how digital cameras work, the ramifications of choosing one camera versus another, and how those choices help creative cinematographers to tell a story. This book empowers you to both correctly choose the right camera and workflow for your project from today’s incredibly varied options, as well as understand the ins and outs of implementing those options. Stump sheds a light on the confusing advantages and disadvantages of shooting theatrical features using digital technology and what it can or can’t do. Topics covered include: * Detailed coverage of Arriflex, Blackmagic, Canon, Ikonoskop, Panasonic, Panavision, Phantom, Red, Silicon Imaging, Sony, and Weisscam digital motion picture cameras * Coverage of a wide variety of lenses, including Angenieux, Canon, Cooke, Fujinon, Hawk, Leica, Panavision, Red, Schneider, Sony, UniqOptics, Vantage, and Zeiss * Coverage of recorders, displays, and look management tools * Exposure theory tips ― learn how to correctly expose digital cameras * Focusing tips ― learn how to focus digital cameras correctly * Checklists to help design digital workflows * Practical tips on preparation ― prepare for shooting a digital motion picture like a professional * Camera set-up and operation, color management, digital intermediates, 3D stereo cinematography, future trends, and much more If you aspire to be a successful cinematographer in this new digital age, or if you already are a working cinematographer in need of a resource to help you stay on top of your game, this is a must-read book.

In 2012/2013 I took a a few classes with David Stump via the Global Cinematography Group and at Sony Digital. This is a must read for those working as cinematographers, operators, special effects or as digital imaging technicians. Mr. Stump gives a comprehensive and specific overview of most of the technical aspects involved in professional digital cinematography. This book is for professionals but I can see the lay person learning much from Stump's encyclopedic knowledge of film and digital cinematography. There are other books that cover the "art" of cinematography, this book addresses major issues now currently discussed by the best cinematographers in the world. A must read. Comprehensive. Timely.

David Stump’s ASC book, Digital Cinematography, is the bible of science and technology of working in the digital age of filmmaking. If you are serious about filmmaking, I could not recommend this book higher! He covers the workflow from the dawn of film, to digital cinema capture, to editing, digital intermediate, and finally archiving for the future. This not only a book that you should read but also one that you must read in order to reach for a higher and professional level of filmmaking.

I'm very impressed by what the book covers. It extensively covers the technologies that digital cameras use. Everything from the sensor to the lens, and then discusses things like color spaces, sampling rates, aspect ratios etc. The the last half of the book is devoted to camera setup, workflows, and displays (monitors) and recorders. There's also mini sections on specific info about many of the pro/prosumer cameras (as of ~2013).There's certainly some good (even great) info in this book. I especially enjoyed the section on lenses and camera setup/operation. What I really didn't like was the first half of the book, for me it was painful to slog through that info because of how it was presented, and that was information that I was actually very interested in. For me though, and let me preface this by saying that I have an engineering degree and have had lots of college level math and physics, I would have much preferred much fewer equations and graphs and charts and theorems, and history., and much more qualitative discussion about achieving various results, anecdotes about in-the-field situations etc. But judging by the other reviews, I may be in the minority with that opinion, which is fine.

This is a state of the art book on everything a cinematographer needs to know about capturing cinema today. As a director, a lot of this went over my head, but having worked with Dave Stump many times, I trust that all the info is accurate and up to date.If you are the cameraman on any kind of digital project, this book is the ultimate guide

I met David Stump at the "Global Cinematography Institute" this year, 2015, he teaches a class there, great instructor! If you cannot take the class with him, buy the book, it's excellent and very comprehensive.
