New York State's Covered Bridges (Images Of America)

At one time, New York State had over 300 covered bridges, but over the years, floods, fires, and modernization have claimed all but 32 of them. Both the Hyde Hall Covered Bridge and the Old Blenheim Bridge are proud record holders. Located in Glimmerglass State Park, the Hyde Hall Covered Bridge is the oldest existing covered bridge in the United States. The Old Blenheim Bridge was the longest single-span covered bridge in the world until it was washed away by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 when the Schoharie Creek flooded. Today, Oxford, New York, is home to the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center, which was specifically designed for covered bridge researchers―the first-ever center of its kind.

For me and my love of all things covered bridges, this series of books is the most important thing that shows many of the old bridges that are no longer around to go and visit.

Bob and Trish Kane have compiled the first complete guide to New York State's existing covered bridges with clear photos of each and well researched captions giving their story. In addition there is a chapter of pictures of bridges no longer in existence, including the Blenheim Bridge, New York's crown jewel until it was destroyed in flooding from a hurricane a few years ago. There is no other book on New York's covered bridges that is more complete or better researched. A great addition to the Arcadia series. Terry Miller

Trish and Bob Kane have assembled a comprehensive collection of photographs of New York State's covered bridges. One particular strength of their book is that there are multiple images of each covered bridge, which thus allows for more substantive comments than is the case with books that only have a single photograph. While their emphasis is on those covered bridges still standing in 19 counties, they have a chapter titled Covered Spans of Yesteryear of lost bridges, including an extensive selection of the heralded Blenheim Bridge in Schoharie County. A pleasure to read!
