I've Never Met An Idiot On The River: Reflections On Family, Photography, And Fly-Fishing

Now in paperback, this New York Times best-selling collection of humorous anecdotes and heartfelt observations from Henry Winkler shares the joy and wisdom he’s accumulated while honing his skills as a fly-fisherman. An accomplished sportsman who meticulously records the measurements of every fish he hooks, Winkler has learned that his yearly trips to the river are not just about catching trout. More importantly, they’re about adopting the proper perspective on life. Or, as Winkler puts it, when he’s fly-fishing, the river acts like a “washing machine for my brain,” recharging him and reminding him that anything is possible. Winkler makes a habit of sharing his angling adventures with his wife, Stacey, and their three children, Jed, Zoe, and Max. The Winklers’ annual trip, where they can escape the busy-ness of everyday life, has brought them together as a family. On the river, Henry has grown to appreciate the support his wife and children give him, learned to listen, and developed the confidence to publish his outdoor photography in his first non-fiction book. An expression of the inherent optimism that stems from the simplicity of the outdoors, I’ve Never Met an Idiot on the River is an invitation to share in the realizations and achievements Winkler has found while fishing. Hopefully it will help you catch a few of your own.

Okay, it's not really a self-help book, a sportsman's guide, or a memoir. It's a work of art from a long-admired person. And he shares his 20-year passion for fly fishing in this latest offering. It is hopefully, the first of more non-fiction works from somebody who previously and effectively tackled the kids market through the Hank Zipzer series. They also addressed challenges I previously faced in elementary school with my own disabilities. But this time he talks with myself and fellow adults. We have to recharge our brain. The book itself is laid out less like a 'memoir' and more like a relaxed and intimate conversation amongst friends. This reflects Winkler's personality as a 'down to earth' individual who never let his head get too big. Personal challenges required him to work harder and smarter throughout his life. Obviously, this strategy paid off!The book is not just writing, because Winkler is also a dynamic photographer. We see photographs of his favorite Montana vacation spot, the perfect place to do this fly-fishing. His family also participate in the annual ritual. Another strength of the book is that his wife Stacey provides a good preface. This is one celebrity book not headed for the bargain bin. It would be worth giving to a friend or relative.

I learned about this book on the Orvis facebook page. I know my title seems a little misleading. Don't get me wrong, I loved the book, even as I got the Kindle version instead of the print version. And this is where I am disappointed. The Kindle version does not include any of the pictures. You read about this very heartwarming story, and you cannot appreciate any of the visuals as they are not included. I had to look inside the hard copy on to see them.I grew-up watching Happy Days, and "The Fonz" was a childhood hero. Had a huge poster of him in my room. Getting to know the real person behind Fonzie was like icing on a cake. Henry Winkler's humor and honesty throuhout the book is wonderful. It is as good as watching The Fonz on Happy Days if not better. I am very happy that I had the chance to get to know Mr. Winkler through this book, and to have shared in his life since Happy Days. And that was NOT disappointing. I am also a Fly Fisher, and amateur photographer, and very happy to learn that we share the same passions.

This book was a gift from my sister for my birthday. As an avid fly fisherman and tier. My books tend to lean to tying Recipe books or How Too books. This book is neither of those. Since my sister gave me the book and wrote a really sweat message on the first empty page I decided to give it a read. The book reads very smooth. Never once did I have to force myself to pick it up to finish. My wife read the first chapter that was written by the author's wife describing her husband's personality on and off the water. My wife laughed very hard and said that he and I could be brothers. She instantly related to his wife living through the same issues pertaining to a very dedicated fly fishing husband. I finished the book in three easy halve hour reads. After my completion of the book, my wife and her mother are now reading it.The book folds a family man's life into his love of fly fishing. All the old clichés of fly fishing comes out in this book. The idea of using fly fishing as an escape from everyday life, too learning lesson from fly fishing to use in everyday life. He talks about some of his personal disabilities that he lived with through his childhood and adult life. Then after he discovered fly fishing he was able to move past the disabilities raising his self-esteem helping him to accomplish some very big roles in his life. As a very avid fly fishier he got into taking nature pictures to record all his fishing trips. All the pictures in the book are from the collection of the author that he had taken. There are some very beautiful pictures along with his captions creating a wonderfully warm connection to the authors inner most feelings. I feel these photos complete the book.As you may have realized from my view point of the book and this short dissertation I recommend this book very highly to all fly fisher persons and for great family entertainment.

This book is simply delightful. You don't have to be a fly fisherman or a photographer to enjoy it and learn from it. Anyone who has ever had their souls crushed will find paths to renewal in this book. Finding lessons all around him, Mr. Winkler shares his revelations with us in the most charming way. Beautifully written and, at times, laugh out loud funny. This book is for fly fishermen, photographers, and anyone who has ever struggled in life.

I do not fish, despite growing up on an island in Puget Sound and still living nearby. In fact, going fishing would be one of the worst things I could think of to do as "fun." However, I found Winkler's book most enjoyable. It is the story of a man's love of flyfishing and of the outdoors, and of the calming effect the sport has on him. The anecdotes about his family are honest (throwing a boot at his daughter because she wasn't hurrying to get to the river and fishing) and heartwarming (the two-page, full-color photo of "The team that makes life glow"--his family photo). Winkler's determination to photograph and record the statistics of each caught fish is something that only someone truly a fanatic would do; I can't imagine it myself but it works for him. The photographs, both color and black and white, make me yearn for a road trip to Montana as Winkler truly captures the beauty of the land. I recommend this book for any fly fishing fan and also for non fishing fans who want a quick, yet interesting book about the passion of one of Hollywood's endearing personalities.
