The Art of iPhone Photography explores how 45 of today's best iPhonegraphers from around the world conceived, composed, and created some of their finest and best-known pieces - all in their own words. Through a step-by-step presentation of each artist's vision, creative decisions, and techniques, beginning through advanced iPhoneographers will immediately be able to apply what they learn and take their own photographic art to the next level.Key features of the book include:A wide variety of styles and subjects: Landscapes, street photography, abstracts, architecture, portraits, collages, concept pieces, etc. Detailed tutorials: Example artworks from authors and contributing photographers accompanied by descriptions of how each piece was created from both a creative and technical standpoint Explanations for practical use of nearly 100 apps, including BlurFX, Camera+, Iris Photo Suite (now Laminar), Juxtaposer, Photogene2, Pixlr-o-matic, ScratchCam FX, Snapseed, Superimpose, and TouchRetouch iPhoneography gallery: A stunning showcase of works by notable iPhoneographersAlways on, always at hand, and inconspicuously deployed, today's smartphones empower us to record the world in ever newer and more personal ways. By leveraging the photo-editing applications found on the iPhone, professional and amateur photographers alike are able to create not only editorial imagery, but also creative art. "Nicki Fitz-Gerald and Bob Weil, at iPhoneographyCentral.com, have built a community dedicated to the burgeoning collaboration between art and technology that is iPhoneography. Their site, and now this book, offer extensive, in-depth tutorials both for budding iPhoneographers looking to advance their craft, and professionals attempting to harness a new toolkit in service of their vision. What they bring to the table is their belief that 'revealing the man behind the curtain' does not diminish the teacher. Technique does not the artist make, but it does enable the newcomer to find his or her own voice. With thousands of apps available and more flooding the market daily, every new iPhoneographer wonders, What apps should I use? The answer to that question is so complex, with so many variables, that an illustrated tutorial such as this becomes an invaluable tool. There is really nothing like it. It does not offer the advice of a single artist or showcase images from a small artistic segment. Indeed, it offers up stories, knowledge, tips, and secrets from many of the key players in the formation of this movement, showcasing more than 40 artists and tutorials and 80 pages of iPhonic art."- Daria Polichetti, Co-Founder of Los Angeles Mobile Arts Festival

The iPhone camera, who would ever imagine that after thought on a cell phone, could produce amazing art. The Art of iPhone Photography not only dispels that myth, it then goes on to describe the techniques used to create that art. It is an impressive book.Where to start? For the photography alone, as a coffee table book, this book is worth the purchase price. Never mind this is one of most intense photography books I have ever read. The Art of iPhone Photography does something I have never seen in any art form, it describes in illustarted step by step detail how the masters created an incredible image. In a rare twist for photography books, the writing is perfection. The authors edited this book down to perfection. The first step in creating this book was to find excellent photography. The authors have found work that ranges from masterpieces to good images. Because this is a compilation of 45 different photographers, there are styles I loved and others I didn't care for. In the end, all are technical masterpieces and amazed me that they were shot with the iPhone camera. The over 350 page book is organized around tutorials, with a gallery intermission in the middle. Each tutorial starts with a single page reproduction of the final image. On the next pages there is a description of what the tutorial is about, the kinds of things that will be learned. Then the photographer describes their thought process, creative inspiration, and why they chose the apps or steps they did. Then the tutorial starts with which apps were used followed by descriptions of the step and pictures illustrating what was done. I particularly loved the starting raw image. Sometimes I would look at that image and think; this was the inspiration for that finished image?

I've read lots of books on creating nice photographs, that usually presume you have a fancy DSLR and Photoshop. Of course, where most people take photographs now is on their phones and if they do anything to "sweeten" the image it's usually just a quick adjustment applied in one of the easy apps that are available for free. It turns out a lot more is possible, and there are really next to no limits for the creative iPhone photographer, willing to try new things. This book is an attempt to show some of the possibilities.I should make clear up front that this is not a quick guide to taking better basic photographs on the iPhone. It's really designed as an introduction to and source of inspiration for using a variety of apps on the phone to capturing and refining artistic photographs and for turning photographic elements into digital artworks. The first part is focused on artistic photography and the second part on illustration and fine art. Each part consists of a series of tutorials, each focused on key works created by established artists who have been inspired by the possibilities of the iPhone and its various photographic and artistic apps. What's really fantastic about the book is that we don't just see their photographs, but they walk us through the process whereby they were created. They talk about their aims in each photograph, what they did to prepare, and the steps they followed to complete them. They identify the apps they used, they talk about how they captured their original images, and then how they used apps to refine them. Each of these tutorials is very clear and nicely illustrated.
