I took this book on a recent family road trip from Cincinnati, OH to the Grand Canyon. We stayed in, or stopped at several lodgings listed in the book and also ate at several of the restaurants. The book was easy to follow, since it broke Route 66 into sections, then listed lodging, followed by dining in each section. Each restaurant or hotel/motel, etc. had a picture and a quick summary of cost range and what they offered, which was helpful to us in making selections on where to eat and stay. This book is up to date and reliable. One suggestion I would make for the next addition is to include the zip code for each establishment, which would make it a bit easier to run directions for GPS users.
Looks very complete, and should help us avoid "pot luck" for eating and lodging on our upcoming Route 66 road trip. I like the way they list certain spots that they recommend for their own sightseeing value, whether you dine/lodge there or not. Spiral binder makes it easy to keep it open to the pages you need as you progress from Chicago to L.A.
As big a believer as I am about buying used and recycling books, I will recommend that you buy the latest version of this one. That said, buy this book. Everywhere you go it will act as a starting point/ beginning reference for many parts of your adventure. Well written and concise, well worth the investment to make your time on the Mother Road as enjoyable as possible.
So pleassed to have this invaluable guide to plan my stops. Cross referenced with the Lonely Planet Route 66 guide it is all that is needed. Also the money spent on the Route 66 Dinning and Lodging Guide goes to a really good cause. I feel really privillaged to be helping such a cause. I highly reccommend this guide with practical usable easy to read and access information, much of it in budget range.
Superb update to the prior edition. Includes photos of the most of the places as well as removes those establishments that are no longer in business.
We just finished a month long route 66 trip. This book was great in helping us select interesting hotels and places to dine. Highly Recommended!
A must when traveling Route 66!!! Our group of friends found this book very helpful in the planning of our trip. 10 peeps and 5 motorcycles, it made it so much easier to see where to stay and eat that we could all decide on.... A great read and travel guide.
Do not bother with this guide, the author does not have much of a clue about food nor does he know a lot about the hospitality industry. We tried a good number of places rated "exceptional" and "a must stop" and all bar one (the Ariston Cafe) were either below average as far as food quality is concerned or rather poor value for money. You are better off going by your instincts or checking on TripAdvisor or Yelp.
