Paddling Long Island is the only book on the market to depict routes and destinations across the whole of Long Island and the New York City area. And it showcases 50 of the very best. It is a diverse selection, too. After all, according to skill level, weather, personal mood, and other factors, a paddler may want open, fast water one day, but a quiet, protected experience at another time, and something in-between later on. It’s all here, from New York City to the far eastern tip of Long Island’s Montauk Point. What’s more, the book’s guidance and language are geared to wide-ranging skill levels: the novice will be enlightened and encouraged, and the seasoned kayaker or canoeist will be engaged and engrossed. That is because the author’s intimate, lifelong knowledge of the area’s waterways shines in his descriptions of natural and social histories, humorous stories, personal anecdotes, and beautiful black-and-white photographs. In addition, the author provides contact information on local paddling clubs, outfitters, and Internet links. And a final extensive section on personal safety, boat and equipment preparedness, and related topics makes this book an invaluable tool.

Great book, read it cover to cover, then use it for reference for your trips.......But Gowanus Canal??!!.....REALLY!!?? Skip that trip!! Stay home and drive small nails under your toe nails!!! You will have more fun!! UGH!! Ken

Great guide to kayaking on Long Island. The author lists 50 different paddling routes in Naasau, Suffolk and NYC (most are in Suffolk)He gives very detailed information about the put in and take out locations, the difficulty levels, potential hazards, tidal issues, times and distances and scenery and histories of routes. As a novice paddler, this guide has been extremely valuable to me.

I bought a standup paddleboard (SUP) several weeks ago and have used this book as my guide to plan my SUP trips. So far, I have paddled in Stony Brook Harbor, the Connetquot River and the Nissequogue River. The book is very readable and the description is concise yet detailed and to the point. The maps and routes are easy to read as well (I also bought a Hudson Valley paddle book, whose maps are much less readable in comparison). This book has helped me plan some wonderful trips so far even though I am a novice paddler and will continue to be used as my guide as I explore to the LI waterways.

This is a great book. Sites are well described in terms of entry and exit conditions, portages (if any) and the flora and fauna to be seen, Language is clear, concise and easy to understand, and is free of the overly wordy descriptions often seen in other books of this kind. If you buy just one book about thee pleasures of paddling NY, this is the one to get.

Extremely informative. A must-have for the recreational paddler.

This is my kayaking bible, Love It!

The reviews are great, the layout of the book needs some work. Its hard to see where a review starts and even harder to quickly see the put in information,

Best book highly recommend it ...has great spots to kayak all the directions how to get there and where to park legally etc....buy it you won't be sorry
